Vitrified Tiles

VITRIFIED TILES

Vitrified tile is a  ceramic tile with very low porosity. It's an alternate to marble and granite flooring. Vitrified tiles are often used outdoors thanks to their water and frost resistance. There are four sorts of Vitrified tiles - Soluble salt, Double charge, Full Body, Glazed.

Process: Vitrified tile is formed by hydraulic pressing a mix of clay, quartz, feldspar and silica, which make vitreous surface. Thus, creating one mass making them hard with low porosity. Different clay bodies reach vitrification at different temperatures.

The evolution of vitrified tiles in Indian market made several sub categories as follows…

Soluble salt: Vitrified tiles that are printed with screen printing technology then polished are called soluble salt vitrified tiles.

  • ·         Cheapest sort of vitrified tiles in Indian market.
  • ·         the planning of soluble salt tiles is subject to dissolve after use of few years.
  • ·         Less design options due to technology limitations.

As a side note it's also important to understand about Nano polished soluble salt tiles. If we apply a layer of liquid silica on vitrified tiles then it fills the micro (nano) pores on the tiles surface and makes it smoother in feel. this sort of tiles is named nano polished vitrified tiles. Nowadays most of the factories in Morbi offer nano polishing for soluble salt tiles so fewer pores are visible and tiles looks shinier & smoother.

Double Charge (DC): this is often a kind of vitrified tiles where the press feeds two colors on the tiles bisque and makes a thick layer of design on top of it. So such design layer becomes 3 to 4 mm thicker. This makes double charge vitrified tiles ideal choice for heavy traffic commercial projects.

  • ·        DC tiles have very long life compared to traditional soluble salt tiles.
  •        Technology limitations the planning patterns are limited.
Full body vitrified tiles: this sort of vitrified tiles has color all the way throughout the body (thickness) of the tile. due to this cheeping or scratches are less noticeable during this sort of tiles. Full body vitrified tiles are formed with the paint mixture pre-added while making the body.

  • ·        Design will NEVER fade because it's spread in entire body of tiles.
  • ·        Ideal flooring which may resist heavy traffic areas like shopping complex, airports etc.
  • ·        Very costly compared to other sort of tiles.
  • ·        Only few tiles companies in Morbi fill body vitrified tiles because every new
  • ·        design need new mixture for body preparation.
  • ·        Limited design selection available.

Glazed Vitrified tiles (GVT): Before the invent of Digital printing some companies in Morbi (like Italica) were manufacturering vitrified tiles with glazed surface; it's called Glazed Vitrified Tiles (GVT). Main advantage with GVT is it offers option of creating any sort of design/art work that's only possible during this sort of vitrified
tiles. Many sorts of
textures (like wooden, bamboo, slate or stone) are possible in GVT.
(UPDATE about GVT: Recently due to digital printing technology over vitrified tiles there are more design options possible in GVT. Probably more vitrified tiles are going to be now printed with digital technology.)

  • ·        The glaze layer on top of vitrified tiles offers us to print any designs. Further due to digital printers the designing possibilities became infinite.
  • ·        GVT tiles are the simplest for any quite requirement. Marble patterns, wooden patterns or anything you'll imagine is now possible in GVT.
  • ·        Due to digital technology the value are higher. We predict that it'll come closer to other sort of tiles briefly time.
